The Carbon Trust is to test a new certification for organisations that are reducing carbon emissions across their supply chains, it announced today.
The trust has developed a draft methodology for the new award and it is looking for organisations to help it run a pilot through to early 2015.
It hopes that the certification will provide a quantitative and qualitative way to recognise organisations that have committed to take action on the environmental impacts of their supply chain. Up to 90% of a typical organisation’s carbon impacts are outside its operational control, the trust estimates.
The methodology involves measuring impacts and improving processes, systems and governance, and the implementation of reduction initiatives.
Darran Messem, managing director of certification at the Carbon Trust, said: “A number of companies are now very good at energy efficiency and cutting carbon inside their own four walls, but the real leaders are starting to look at how they can have an impact across the supply chain.”
