Yorkshire-based waste company Associated Waste Management (AWM) has been fined £125,000 for repeated odour pollution that local residents complained made them feel sick. It was also ordered to pay costs of £75,000.
The company admitted two offences at waste transfer facilities in Leeds and Bradford. Between June 2012 and October 2013, Environment Agency officers carried out more than 70 odour assessments at the sites, most of which recorded smells that were likely to cause offence to human senses.
AWM admitted at Leeds Crown Court its odour suppression equipment had not been effective.
